DESCRIPTION
DANIEL BATALLA (Uruguay, 1960).
"Inner look", 2000.
Oil on cardboard.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 75 x 95 cm; 90 x 109 cm (frame).
Daniel Batalla trained in painting under the principles of Joaquín Torres García, creator of Constructive Universalism, one of the most influential movements in South American art. Although his work has evolved towards new forms, it retains essential fundamentals such as structure and harmony.
His work is constructed from popular imagery and mass visual culture, incorporating elements from advertising and images created for collective consumption. From these references, Batalla develops his own codified language. The palette of his works focuses on primary colors, black and white, with monochromatic backgrounds on which the compositional elements are distributed. His paintings combine movement and symbolism, revealing messages that can only be perceived through detailed observation.
From his early studies at the Taller de Torres García with Daymán Antúnez, Manolita Piña, Elsa Andrada and Augusto Torres, to his later encounters with Francisco Matto, Julio Alpuy and Gonzalo Fonseca, Batalla consolidated a solid formation in abstraction and constructivism.
Since 1999 he has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in America and Europe, including shows in Buenos Aires (ARTEBA99), New York (Cecilia de Torres Gallery), Caracas, Bogota, Washington DC, Miami, Birritz, Basel, Marbella, Milan and Montevideo. His work is part of collections such as the Phoebus Foundation (Belgium), the Daniela Chappard Foundation and the Gurvich Foundation.
