DESCRIPTION
FRANCISCO MATTO (Montevideo, 1911-1995).
Untitled.
Oil on cardboard.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 27 x 24 cm; 41 x 38 cm (frame).
This work reflects Francisco Matto's ability to combine the precision of constructivism with an intensely expressive palette, where the contrast of complementary colors, such as reds and greens, generates a visual vibration that brings energy and dynamism to the composition. The piece maintains the structural clarity typical of his style, but the chromatic strength gives it a more emotional character, demonstrating his interest in balancing geometry with pictorial sensibility.
Matto was trained in Montevideo and was linked to the Uruguayan modernist and constructivist environment, influenced by the legacy of José Gurvich and the principles of Latin American constructivism, developing a visual language where structure and color dialogue intensely.
His work has been exhibited in institutions such as the National Museum of Visual Arts (MNAV, Montevideo), the São Paulo Biennial, the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro and the MACBA in Barcelona. It is part of important collections, among them the MNAV, the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA) and international private collections.
