DESCRIPTION
DIONÍS BAIXERAS VERDAGUER (Barcelona, 1862 - 1943).
"Marinas".
Pair of oil paintings on canvas glued to board.
Signed.
Measurements: 9 x 16 cm.(each one); 17 x 24 cm.(frames).
These marine paintings are inscribed in the Mediterranean impressionist tradition, which the artist assimilated through his contact with French painting and his constant attention to light effects. However, they maintain a compositional balance and a chromatic sobriety that refer to his solid academic training.
The small format reinforces the reading of these works as direct studies of nature or pictorial sketches made with immediacy, where the matter and the brushstroke acquire prominence.
Dionís Baixeras was linked to the Círculo Artístico de Sant Lluc since its foundation. In 1908 he made a collection of drawings, of great documentary value, of places in old Barcelona that were to disappear due to the construction of the Via Layetana. His work is preserved in the Metropolitan of New York, the Museum of Art and Industry of Roubaix (France) and the MACBA, among others.
