DESCRIPTION
GERMAN TAIBO (A Coruña, 1889 - Paris, 1919).
"Galician landscape".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 67 x 85 cm; 80 x 98 cm (frame).
In this painting the author presents us with a corner of the coast, a landscape that shows us the evocative character of the everyday, the close and the known. Formally, the careful chromatic and light study stands out, the result of which is an image solidly built on an agile reading rhythm.
Germán Taibo grew up in Buenos Aires, where he emigrated with his family as a child. In this city he began his artistic apprenticeship, to later broaden his studies in Paris, at the Julien Academy. From Paris he traveled to his hometown in 1908, coming into direct contact with the Galician artists of the province. He participated in the Regional Exhibitions of Galician art in 1912 and 1917, while continuing his international projection by participating in European exhibitions, such as the Paris Salon of 1913 (in which he won the second medal), as well as American ones. In this sense, his link with his adopted country is particularly evident in his participation in Spanish pictorial exhibitions organized at the Witcomb Salon in Buenos Aires. His presence in the Buenos Aires exhibition scene culminated with his personal exhibition of 1910 in this same gallery, as well as with his participation in the Galician Art Exhibition of 1919, organized by Fernando García in Buenos Aires. His pieces exhibited there constituted a sort of posthumous tribute to Taibo, due to his premature death that same year. Germán Taibo is currently represented in the Museum of Fine Arts of A Coruña, the Caixanova Collection, the City Council of A Coruña and the Museum of Pontevedra, among other public and private collections in Galicia, France and South America.
