BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

JOSEP AMAT PAGÈS (Barcelona, 1901 - 1991).
"Carrer".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
With label on the back of the Sala Parés.
Measurements: 67 x 51 cm; 81,5 x 66 cm (frame).

Urban scene that represents a narrow street of the old town of Barcelona, animated by the presence of figures and dominated by the succession of balconies, facades and architectural elements that lead the look towards the bottom of the composition. The closed perspective of the alley and the presence of the arch at the end of the path bring depth and dynamism to the whole.

The work is resolved with loose brushstrokes, characteristic of Josep Amat's pictorial language. The palette rich in ochers, greens and blues, together with the touches of color applied with freedom, gives the scene a lively and luminous atmosphere, where architecture and daily life are integrated naturally.

Josep Amat was trained at La Llotja de Barcelona and was a disciple of Joaquim Mir, completing his training in France and Italy. He exhibited in cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Brussels and Havana, regularly showing his work in the Sala Parés between 1943 and 1987. He was awarded in exhibitions and competitions, among them the Spring Salon in Barcelona, the National Fine Arts and the Havana Biennial (1953). Professor of landscape painting at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona, he joined the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi in 1981.

His work is preserved in institutions such as the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Museum of Montserrat and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
