Follower of VI VICENTE LÓPEZ PORTAÑA (Valencia, 1772 - Madrid, 1850).
"Portrait of Juan de Mata de Aguilera".
Oil on canvas.
Preserves period frame.

Measurements: 61 x 47 cm; 75 x 60 cm (frame).
Portrait of official character that represents Juan de Mata de Aguilera following the formal models of the Spanish academic portrait of the beginning of the XIX century. The composition emphasizes the dignity and social rank of the character through a sober representation, with a neutral background and careful lighting that highlights the physiognomic features and clothing. The precise brushstroke, the soft modeling of the face and the attention to detail in the fabrics and ornaments reflect the direct influence of the pictorial language developed by Vicente López Portaña, the first court painter of the Spanish court during the reign of Fernando VII.
The work falls within the circle of Vicente López's followers, artists who adopted his refined naturalism and elegant treatment of light and texture, characteristic of court and bourgeois portraiture in Spain in the first third of the 19th century.
