Philip Hemsley was a British painter of oils and watercolors active during the second half of the 20th century, whose work is inscribed within the English figurative tradition, with special attention to the landscape, the urban scene and the portrait. He received his artistic training at Kingston College of Art and later at the schools of the Royal Academy of Arts, where he won several academic awards, including the Silver Medal of the Royal Academy. Parallel to his activity as a painter, he developed an important teaching activity as an art teacher in several secondary schools.
Throughout his career he exhibited in important institutions and art societies in the United Kingdom, including the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Society of British Artists, the New English Art Club and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, as well as in galleries such as Redfern and in exhibitions held at the Guildhall in the City of London. His work is in a number of public and private collections, including those of the Guildhall, City of London; London Contemporary Art; the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames; the London Boroughs of Hackney and Camden; the Leicester Education Authority; the Department of Education and Science (Dame Edith Russell-Smith Trust); and the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising. He is also represented in private collections both in the UK and abroad, including the collection of Lord Rayner. Some of his work was reproduced in publications such as Gallery and Artist and The Times Educational Supplement, and he was a member of The Reynolds Club and traveled frequently in Europe and the United States, visiting countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the United States, experiences that influenced his landscapes and urban scenes.
