Relevant work of Turi Simeti, key figure of the Italian monochrome abstraction and one of the most solid artists emerged in the environment of the Milanese avant-garde of the sixties, whose production has experienced a remarkable revaluation in the international market.
His work is part of the plastic research developed in Italy in dialogue with the ZERO group, introducing a distinctive element: the characteristic oval reliefs that stress the pictorial surface and generate a subtle but constant light vibration.
In Un tondo nero, this research reaches a great formal purity. On a dark monochrome field, the "tondi" emerge almost imperceptibly, activating the surface through the incidence of light. Black thus becomes a dynamic space, where perception varies according to the position of the viewer, reinforcing the objectual character of the work.
Trained in Palermo and moved to Rome in the late 1950s, Simeti came into contact with key figures such as Alberto Burri and Lucio Fontana, participating in 1965 in the historic Zero Avantgarde exhibition. He later settled in Milan and developed an intense international career.
His work is held in important international collections and museums, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, the Museo d'Arte Moderna in Bolzano and the MAM in Rio de Janeiro.
