The painting is part of the English tradition of equestrian themes, closely linked to collecting, rural life and equestrian culture. The dim lighting of the stable, the warm tones of the wall and the secondary elements -the straw, the harnesses and the side door- create an intimate and silent atmosphere. In contrast to the monumental character of other equestrian portraits, this work proposes a closer and more recollected vision, where the horse appears as the absolute protagonist within a space of repose.
