Alfonso Sucasas went beyond the traditional folkloric typism in his representation of characters and scenes of the Galician rural world, as shown in this ink on paper, where the human figure acquires an expressive and deeply emotional dimension. Considered one of the great references of contemporary Galician painting and one of the last classics of this discipline in Galicia, he developed a personal and unmistakable language, rooted in the memory and popular roots of his land, although always far from any picturesque or anecdotal vision.
Born in Goiás, Lalín, in 1940, he began his artistic training at the School of Arts and Crafts and later continued his studies in Madrid. Later he traveled to Venezuela and Brazil, where he lived for several years and came into contact with new plastic currents and with the work of the muralist Cândido Portinari, whose influence was decisive in his conception of drawing, composition and the social commitment of painting. Upon his definitive return to Galicia in 1968, he began an intense artistic career focused first on themes of socio-political content and, later, on a profoundly humanized vision of rural Galicia. His work, with a marked expressionist tendency, is characterized by the vigor of the drawing, the curvilinear forms and a powerful emotional charge. Throughout his career he received numerous awards and retrospective exhibitions, establishing himself as an essential figure in 20th century Galician art.
