Ocaña's work stands out for its free, naive and deeply personal language, with a loose brushstroke and a luminous palette. Ocaña combines everyday and popular elements with a poetic sensibility close to ritual: the Virgin, the cat, the fruits and the textiles compose an image charged with memory, theatricality and inner life.
José Pérez Ocaña was a singular figure of the Spanish art and counterculture of the Transition. Painter, performer and activist, he developed an oeuvre marked by Andalusian popular culture, baroque religiosity, transvestism, festivity and freedom of identity. Linked to the Barcelona of the seventies, his figure was immortalized by Ventura Pons in Ocaña, retrat intermitent. His work is represented in institutions such as the MACBA, the Reina Sofia Museum and the Andalusian Center of Contemporary Art.
