DESCRIPTION
JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937).
"Costumbrista scene", 1882.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 41 × 60.5 cm.; 64 × 84 cm. with frame.
Costumbrista scene of great narrative vividness, set in a rural or periurban exterior. A group of children are gathered around a card game, while the chickens, the donkey, the tools, the laundry and the popular architecture complete a daily environment full of details. The scene combines spontaneity, social observation and a delicate anecdotal sense.
The composition stands out for the clarity with which Benlliure organizes the space and for the descriptive richness of the secondary elements, which do not function as mere decoration, but as an essential part of the visual story. The Mediterranean light, the precision of the drawing and the warm palette give the whole a friendly and luminous atmosphere, where the artist balances naturalism, narrative grace and technical virtuosity.
José Benlliure Gil was an outstanding figure in Spanish painting at the end of the 19th century, brother of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure. He participated in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, obtaining third medals in the editions of 1876 and 1878 and first in 1887. He belonged to the Academies of San Fernando (Madrid), San Lucas (Rome), San Carlos (Valencia), Brera (Milan) and Munich. Between 1904 and 1912 he directed the Spanish Academy in Rome. The most important part of his production is preserved in Valencia, in his House Museum and in the Museum of Fine Arts San Pío V. He is also represented in the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Palace of Charles V in Granada, among others.
