The painter places the spectator in front of a wide and peaceful river, probably inspired in some European rural environment, where the water acts as visual axis and conductor of the look towards the hills in the background. The technique evidences a clear impressionist and post-impressionist influence: the brushstrokes are loose, fast and visible, building the scene more by chromatic sensations than by minute details. Cold tones predominate, blues, greens and pearly grays, which are balanced with warm ochre and reddish tones in the trees and vegetation, providing depth and atmospheric contrast.
Light plays a central role. The wide, vaporous sky reflects a soft illumination that diffuses over the water, creating a calm and melancholic atmosphere. The aerial perspective softens the mountains on the horizon and gives a sense of distance and spatial amplitude.
The composition is also notable for the small island or strip of vegetation in the foreground, which breaks the horizontality of the river and adds dynamism to the scene.
