BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ANTONI CLAVÉ (Barcelona, 1913 – Saint-Tropez, France, 2005).
Untitled.
Painting and collage on paper.
Signed in pencil.
Measurements: 64.5 x 48.5 cm; 81 x 66 cm (frame).

Clavé treats paper as a field for artistic experimentation, where painting, material, and collage are integrated into a single expressive structure. The fragments of fabric, the torn areas, the stains, the impasto, and the violent strokes introduce a physical and almost tactile dimension, distancing the work from traditional representation to situate it in a territory between abstraction, the sign, and material memory.

The intensity of the red, applied in broad gestural areas, is a hallmark of contrast with the density of the black and the presence of incorporated elements, which lend rhythm, tension, and depth. The composition appears to be constructed from remnants, traces, and overlays—characteristic features of an artist who made collage a fundamental resource for expanding the expressive possibilities of painting.

The work belongs to Clavé’s mature period, when his exploration of matter, the sign, and fragmentation attained a distinct personality. The result is a powerful and resounding piece, where the surface becomes a space of visual sedimentation, charged with energy, memory, and plastic tension.

Antoni Clavé was one of the key figures in Spanish art during the second half of the 20th century. A painter, printmaker, sculptor, and set designer, he developed an international career marked by technical experimentation and a highly personal language, in which material abstraction, collage, baroque memory, and an intense theatrical dimension converge. His work is represented in institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the MACBA, and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, among other public collections.
