BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

AMELIA RIERA TOYOS (Barcelona, 1940).
“Tribut” series.
Mixed media on canvas.
Signed and dated on the reverse.
Measurements: 47 x 40 cm; 66 x 58 cm (frame).

One of the pioneers of Catalan Informalism, Amelia Riera trained at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. In 1962, she participated in the Ciclo de Arte de Hoy, of which she was a founding member, as well as in the VI Salón de Mayo in Barcelona, the Joan Miró Drawing Prize, and other major group exhibitions. The following year, she held her first solo exhibition at the Belarte gallery in Barcelona. Two years later, in 1965, she made her debut in Madrid with a solo exhibition at the city’s Ateneo. She made her international debut in 1969, when she exhibited her work in a solo show at the Il Giorgio gallery in Milan. Since then, and to this day, Amelia Riera has held solo exhibitions throughout Spain—particularly in Barcelona—as well as in Sweden, Warsaw, Tokyo, and many other cities abroad. She has also taken part in major group exhibitions both in Spain and in other European and American countries, with her participation in the major exhibition “Informalisme Català,” held at the Santa Mónica Art Center in Barcelona in 1990—where she was the only female artist selected—being particularly noteworthy. Throughout her career, she has been honored with the Barcelona Women’s Art Salon Award (1966) and a Medal and Diploma of Honor at the Ancona Graphic Arts Competition (1968), among other awards. Her works are currently held in the collections of MACBA, the Norrköping Art Museum in Sweden, the Zabaleta Museum in Jaén, and others.
