Ron English is an American painter and artist considered one of the most influential figures in contemporary pop art and the culture jamming movement. With a BFA from the University of North Texas and an MFA from the University of Texas, he began his career in the 1980s by intervening on billboards and in urban spaces, developing a visual language critical of consumer culture and advertising.Throughout his career, he has combined studio painting with urban art, creating his own iconography in which characters from popular culture, references to art history, and sharp social satire converge. His concept of “POPaganda” defines this fusion between the imagery of Pop Art and a critique of the mass media’s mechanisms of persuasion.
His pictorial work features reinterpretations of masterpieces from art history, particularly Picasso’s Guernica, as well as distinctly pop-style compositions executed with a technique bordering on photorealism. His works have been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums across the United States, Europe, and Asia, establishing him as one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary art linked to visual culture and mass consumption.
