Joseph François was a Belgian painter who specialized in landscapes, seascapes, harbor views, and genre scenes. Trained in the Belgian art scene of the late 19th century, he developed a career linked to the renewal of naturalist landscape painting in Belgium. In his early years, he was influenced by Hippolyte Boulenger, one of the leading figures of the Tervuren School, from whom he inherited an interest in the direct observation of nature and the atmospheric effects of light.
He made his debut at the 1881 Brussels Salon with the work *Une drève dans la Forêt de Soignes*, launching an exhibition career that led him to participate regularly in Belgium’s major triennial salons. He was also a member of L’Essor, an important artistic circle founded in Brussels that promoted a modern and innovative vision of the visual arts, bringing together some of the most prominent artists on the Belgian scene at the time.
Throughout his career, he focused particularly on depicting forests, ponds, rivers, harbors, and coastal landscapes—works in which he stood out for his sensitivity to variations in light and for a style of painting characterized by its atmospheric and serene quality. His artistic language, rooted in naturalism, evolved toward an increasingly free and poetic interpretation of the landscape, paying special attention to the seasons, changes in the weather, and reflections on the water.Recognition of his career came in 1913, when he won a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français.
