PEDRO DE VALENCIA (Valencia, 1902–1971).
"Harlequin," 1960.
Mixed media on paper.

Pedro Sánchez began his training at the School of Fine Arts in Valencia in 1916, where he developed his budding artistic sensibility as a student of Garnelo, Renau, and Benlliure. He later continued his studies in Madrid and Italy, where he stayed thanks to a scholarship from the San Fernando Academy. In the early 1930s, he made his international debut by exhibiting his work in Pittsburgh (U.S.), and from then on he showed his work in solo and group exhibitions around the world, such as the shows organized by the Society of Independent Artists in Copenhagen, Berlin, and Paris. He specialized in the figure, particularly portraiture, while also creating landscapes and still lifes. In 1936, he was awarded third prize at the Carnegie Institute’s International Exhibition in Pittsburgh, and later became a member of Eugenio d’Ors’s Academia Breve. His works are held in the collections of the MAPFRE Foundation, the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Vilafamés, among others.
