A graduate of the Valencia School of Fine Arts, Juan Ribera was a founding member of artistic groups such as Parpalló, Arte Actual, and the Mediterranean Art Movement. He was part of the Valencian and Madrid avant-garde art scenes, participating in exhibitions at the Juan Mordó Gallery. He held solo exhibitions at the General Directorate of Fine Arts in Madrid (1969) and the Valencia City Museum (1998), among other venues, and took part in notable group exhibitions such as those held at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris (1963), “Figurative Painters of Contemporary Spain” (1964)—a traveling exhibition in the United States—and the IVAM in Valencia. Throughout his career, he has received grants from the Provincial Council and City Council of Valencia, the Casa Velázquez in Madrid, and the March Foundation, and has been awarded the Valencia Prize at the Barcelona Fine Arts Exhibition (1960), the Valencia Provincial Council Award at the National Exhibition in Madrid (1968), the gold medal at the March Salon in Valencia (1977), and the Archival Award for Artistic Merit (1995), among others. Ribera’s works are represented in the San Pío V Museum in Valencia, the Vilafamés Museum of Contemporary Art, the Municipal Museum and the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, the Springfield Museum (Massachusetts), the Cathedral, the Provincial Council, the Ateneo, and the City Museum of Valencia, among others.
