During the 1960s, collage established itself as Sven Hauptmann’s primary field of exploration, eventually becoming the medium that most personally defined his body of work. Following his stay in France between 1950 and 1962, the Danish artist gradually focused his work on combining found materials, printed papers, and everyday objects, valuing both their visual qualities and the traces of use accumulated on them.

In this composition, he layers cardboard, typographic fragments, colored papers, fabrics, and other elements using cuts, tears, and deliberately visible staples. The earthy tone of the cardboard is enlivened by greens, blues, and reds, while the isolated letters lose their informative function to become graphic forms. Hauptmann thus preserves the physical identity of humble and ephemeral materials, but reorganizes them through a rigorous structure in which texture, color, and typography take on equal prominence.

Self-taught, Hauptmann made her debut in 1944 and, in addition to collage, worked with painting, ceramics, sculpture, and assemblage. Her reputation was solidified precisely through these latter techniques, and in 1982 she received the Eckersberg Medal. Her work is represented at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen and at the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, an institution that holds several of the artist’s collages from the 1960s.
