During the 1960s, collage became Sven Hauptmann’s signature medium after he returned to Denmark following a long stay in France. The artist found in the combination of printed fragments, found papers, and everyday materials a language capable of integrating composition, color, and chance. This 1968 work belongs precisely to the period in which he consolidated this practice, now considered the most distinctive core of his body of work.
Here, Hauptmann arranges fragments from technical publications, banknotes or numbered coupons, advertising materials, and brightly colored clippings. Yellows, blues, blacks, and oranges form a vertical structure against the aged tone of the printed surface, while the overlays, tears, and shifts in texture preserve the material identity of each element. The result lies somewhere between abstraction and the visual memory of print culture, transforming modest and ephemeral materials into a carefully balanced composition.
The date is particularly significant: the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen also holds a collage by Hauptmann dated 1968, in addition to other examples from 1958–1962 and 1969. Self-taught, Hauptmann also worked with painting, ceramics, sculpture, and assemblage, though he ultimately made collage his primary medium of expression. In 1982, she received the Eckersberg Medal, one of the most prestigious awards in the Danish art world. Her work is represented at the Statens Museum for Kunst and in Danish museum collections such as that of the current Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg.
