A painter, illustrator, and poster artist, Carlos Vázquez trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he studied under Carlos de Haes. Awarded a scholarship by the Provincial Council of Ciudad Real, he completed his studies in France and Italy before finally settling in Paris, where he worked with Léon Bonnat. He regularly submitted his works to national and international competitions, winning third prize in the 1892 National Exhibition, second prize in the 1899 and 1901 editions, first prize in 1910, and an honorary award in 1904. He participated in the Paris Salons, where he received an honorable mention in 1890, a third medal in 1904, and a second medal in 1907. He was also awarded first prize at the 1899 Barcelona International Exposition, a silver medal at the 1910 Paris Universal Exposition and at the 1915 Buenos Aires Universal Exposition—the same year he won a gold medal at the San Francisco Exposition. He was a member of the San Fernando Academy in Madrid, a Knight of the French Legion of Honor, an honorary member of the Hispanic Society of America, president of the Artistic Circle and the Artistic-Literary Society of Barcelona, and was awarded the Grand Cross of Alfonso XII and the Red Eagle Order of Germany. His works are represented in the Prado Museum, as well as in prominent private collections.
