VICENTE CHUMILLA (Yecla, Murcia, 1956)
“Yellow Earth,” 2004.
Mixed media on canvas.
Signed, titled, and dated on the reverse.
Bears a stamp on the reverse from Galería Kreisler, Madrid.
Measurements: 100 x 100 x 4 cm.
In “Yellow Earth,” Vicente Chumilla focuses the composition on a broad color field dominated by yellows and ochres, rendered through glazes and subtle variations in texture. The apparent uniformity is interrupted by small gestures and painterly accidents, including the brief accent on the left margin, which introduces tension and depth to the surface.
The work is an abstract painting in which color, texture, and space take precedence over any figurative reference. The square format also fosters an immersive perception of the pictorial field, treated as a continuous surface rather than a space of representation.
Vicente Chumilla is a painter and printmaker who is essentially self-taught. Based in Madrid since 1981, his painting has consistently emphasized gesture, texture, and the expressiveness of color—aspects particularly evident in *Tierra amarilla*. In 1992, he won the Arganzuela Municipal Council Award and First Prize at the Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo National Painting Salon. In 2004, the year this work was created, he exhibited at the Kreisler Gallery in Madrid and received an honorable mention from the jury of the Talavera de la Reina National Painting Prize.
