In “Broken Silences,” José Ortiz Domingo explores one of the most characteristic aspects of his painting: the construction of the image through the layering of material, color, and fragmentary structures. Against a background dominated by grays and blacks, areas of blue, turquoise, orange, and magenta emerge from layers of paint of varying density, creating a composition articulated by hallmarks such as transparencies, crackle effects, and lines that suggest an underlying grid. The result lies somewhere between abstraction and a barely recognizable evocation of architectural forms, allowing the material and the painterly process to organize the surface. This emphasis on the process aligns with Ortiz Domingo’s career, whose painting has been described as a body of work constructed through successive associations and transformations of the image.
A painter and professor of French Philology and Literature at the University of Zaragoza, José Ortiz Domingo studied in Paris at the Lycée Espagnol and the Sorbonne, while also receiving training in drawing and painting. Since the early 2000s, he has exhibited in various Spanish and European cities and has received, among other honors, the first prize in the Ciudad de Roquetes painting competition and, in 2009, the 15th Malón de Echaide Painting Prize. The municipal art collection of the Zaragoza City Council houses his work *La novia del viento* (*The Bride of the Wind*), also created using mixed media on a rigid support.
