The theme of bullfighting occupies a prominent place in Agustí Puig Pinyol’s pictorial imagination, as he is drawn to the extraordinary visual and symbolic power of the confrontation between bull and matador. Far from a descriptive depiction of the bullfight, the artist transforms the bullring into a space of tension, movement, and emotion, constructing the figures through energetic strokes, splashes of color, and deliberately simplified forms. The bull takes on a powerful physical presence, while the bullfighter becomes an agile, almost choreographic figure, establishing between them a interplay of forces that Puig interprets as a metaphor for life, death, chance, and passion. These compositions allow the artist to showcase some of the most characteristic features of his artistic language: gestural freedom, expressive intensity, and the gradual dissolution of figuration into territories bordering on abstraction.
Agustí Puig trained at the Escola d’Arts i Oficis de Sabadell, the Escola Massana, and the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc. In 1985, he received the fourth honorable mention in the Joan Miró International Drawing Prize. His work is included in the collections of the Fundació Vila Casas, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Tarragona, among others.
