A painter and watercolorist with Impressionist roots, Josep Sarquella settled in Barcelona in 1949, where he completed his training at the Círculo Artístico and the Círculo de Sant Lluc. He held his first solo exhibition in 1958 in Palamós. From then on, he regularly participated in exhibitions throughout Catalonia, Madrid, France, the Netherlands, and Santo Domingo. He also participated in various group exhibitions and art competitions, winning awards on several occasions. He was a member of the Sant Lluc Art Circle in Barcelona, and in 1999, the Salón de Mayo in Barcelona held a tribute in his honor. His work focuses primarily on landscapes, seascapes, and street scenes, particularly from the Empordà, Osona, Barcelona, and Mallorca. His works are represented in various Spanish museums and collections.
