With a distinctly Orientalist and genre-art character, the work was created by Alfred Schlomka during his stay in North Africa and is dated and located in Algiers in 1888. Schlomka, a painter of Hungarian origin based in Paris and a student of Ernest Ange Duez, developed a style focused primarily on genre scenes and figures from everyday life; contemporary sources document his activity beginning in 1886 and his participation in international exhibitions, where he received an honorable mention in 1886 and a silver medal in 1889. In this composition, the artist places in the foreground a mule driver dressed in loose-fitting light-colored clothing alongside his donkey, which is loaded with large baskets overflowing with flowers and vegetables. Behind them, a sloping street opens up, leading the eye toward the Mediterranean, amid the luminous architecture of Algiers. The combination of the earthy tones of the road, the whites of the buildings and the clothing, and the intense hints of green, orange, and red in the cargo allows Schlomka to explore the powerful North African light through loose, expressive brushwork. The painting’s significance also lies in the fact that it serves as a dated record of his time in Algiers and reveals a less familiar facet of an artist known primarily for his European genre scenes. In fact, the historical literature records him as a genre painter active in Paris, while his documented works include interiors, fishermen, and scenes of everyday life.
