In this work, the monumental scale of the composition intensifies the visionary dimension of the scene. Against a gray and black landscape—with dense texture and an almost apocalyptic atmosphere—a succession of stylites is arranged on crosses that diminish toward the background. The small figures remain motionless amid the turbulence of the sky, rendered through broad sweeps of paint that evoke the expansion of an atomic cloud. The vanishing point of the crosses reinforces the depth and draws the eye toward the horizon.

The stylite is a central figure in Mira’s universe. Inspired by the ancient Christian ascetics who sought isolation atop columns, the artist here replaces the column with the cross, symbolically bringing the anchorite closer to the image of Christ. Since the late 1980s, Mira has repeatedly developed this iconography, placing his stylites against backdrops of isolation, temptation, or catastrophe.

The power of the composition stems from the contrast between contemplation and destruction. Faced with the implicit violence of a nuclear explosion, the figures remain absorbed in their contemplation, creating a tension between spirituality, vulnerability, and contemporary threat. Mira thus transposes a figure from the ascetic tradition into a setting marked by the danger of technological annihilation, transforming the scene into a reflection on the human condition.

This iconography is well documented in the artist’s body of work. A piece from the same series, titled *Estilita contemplating an atomic explosion* and dated 1989, is documented in the catalog for Víctor Mira’s exhibition held at the Galerie Zellermayer in Berlin in 1990. Another variation, *Estilita and Atomic Explosion*, from 1990, was later exhibited in Zaragoza and became part of the collection of the Provincial Council of Zaragoza.

Víctor Mira pursued a multidisciplinary career as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and writer. Beginning in the 1970s, he exhibited internationally and developed a deeply personal iconography centered on themes such as the Estilitas, Montserrat, the Caminantes, the Bach Cantatas, and his depictions of Christ. Following his first solo exhibition at the N’Art Gallery in Zaragoza, he maintained close ties with Germany and divided his time between that country and Barcelona; in 1972, he participated in the Encuentros de Pamplona, where he met John Cage, and in 1980, he held a solo exhibition at the George Staempfli Gallery in New York. victormira.com His work is held in collections such as those of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and the MACBA.
