Sonia Navarro Peralta, is a Spanish visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice focuses especially on textile art. Her career has been recognized with outstanding awards, including the BMW Painting Prize in 2023 for her work Redes 1, a piece that is part of a series that establishes analogies between the paths of sewing patterns and maps or diagrams of movement.
Coming from a family with a deep-rooted artisan tradition, from an early age she was exposed to the world of sewing and tailoring, knowledge she acquired directly from her grandmothers and aunts. This domestic and material heritage later became the conceptual axis of her work. Navarro graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Granada in 2002 and later took a Master's Degree in Photography at the International Center of Photography and Film (EFTI) in Madrid.
His artistic production has been included in important institutional collections, such as those of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the University of Granada and the King Juan Carlos University. He is also part of important private collections such as DKV Seguros, the Entrecanales Collection and Scan London. His work has had a sustained presence in the national and international contemporary art circuit, participating since 2000 in the ARCO fair in Madrid with Galería T20, as well as in other exhibition platforms of international relevance such as Next Chicago, Volta Basel, Maco Mexico, Artissima Torino, SP Arte São Paulo and Pulse Madrid.
Throughout her career, Navarro has received important grants and distinctions. She was selected in the 2004 and 2008 editions of the "Generations" program promoted by La Casa Encendida. She has been a recipient of the Plastic Arts Scholarship of the Ministry of Culture at the College of Spain in Paris (2006 and 2011) and the Scholarship of the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome, awarded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2017 he was a finalist in the IX Pilar Citoler International Biennial of Contemporary Photography Award, as well as in the Mislata Acquisition Awards, linked to social commitment in the visual arts. In 2020 she received support from the visualizARTE program, framed in the CREA Plan of the Regional Ministry of Education and Culture of the Region of Murcia, and in 2021 she was awarded one of the Creation Grants of the S.O.S Arte/Cultura campaign, promoted by the VEGAP entity to support artists residing in Spain.
