DESCRIPTION

JORGE ROMERO (Bogotá, Colombia, 1973).
"Il Bacchino malato. Madrid, 2025.
Acrylic on canvas.
Certificate of authenticity attached.
Measurements: 60 x 73 cm.

Belonging to the series "Heads", this work is a personal vision of some of the works of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, master of tenebrism, and pays tribute to his unique way of defining the expression of the human face.

Jorge Romero's painting is articulated around a contemporary expressionism with a strong psychological charge, where the face and the figure emerge from the darkness through an intense use of chiaroscuro. His language is mostly monochromatic and focuses on the tension between light and shadow as a narrative vehicle, heir to both the baroque tradition -Caravaggio and Goya- and the gestural abstraction and material dramatism of modern artists such as Franz Kline or Pierre Soulages.

Jorge Romero is a Colombian painter based in Spain since 2008. After an initial training in Communication Sciences and a solid professional career in the field of advertising and graphic design -first in Venezuela and later in Barcelona and Madrid-, his direct contact with Pop Art during a project for a Madrid gallery in 2014 marked the decisive return to painting. Since then, he has developed a personal body of work focused on the exploration of light, contrast and the presence of the human figure as a space of conflict. His work has been presented in international contexts such as the Salon International d'Art Contemporain de Paris and in exhibitions and projects linked to contemporary galleries and platforms in Madrid, consolidating a recognizable pictorial discourse within current figuration.
