The Italian artist Mart Signed was formed in a context deeply linked to the urban visual culture. From a very young age he showed interest in artistic experimentation, starting in the underground scene of his hometown as a street artist, where he began to develop a plastic language marked by the immediacy of graffiti and an early sensitivity to social and environmental issues. After obtaining a diploma in advertising graphics in Livorno, he continued his training at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, a decisive stage in which he delved into the history of art and consolidated his favorite techniques, stencil, spray and collage, while actively participating in exhibitions, fairs and performance projects. His artistic practice has also extended to the field of installation and performance art.
This dialogue between artistic tradition and popular culture is manifested in this work starring Michelangelo Buonarroti's famous David, accompanied by Santa's Little Helper, the dog from The Simpsons series. In this composition, the absolute icon of the classical Renaissance ideal is inserted into a visual environment dominated by graffiti-like signs and graphics, which function as an urban background. The presence of the animated character introduces an ironic contrast between the solemnity of classical sculpture and popular media culture, a frequent resource in today's urban art. Through this juxtaposition, Mart Signed questions the traditional hierarchies of art history and proposes an updated reading of the great cultural symbols, integrating them into the visual imaginary of contemporary society.
