Among Damien Hirst's works, he is especially recognized artistically for his "spin paintings", such as the one shown here, which are paintings made on a rotating circular surface. In this particular case it is one made on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition "Requiem" at the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kiev in 2009, from April 25 to September 20, 2009. The butterfly has become an imaginary of the British artist, who uses it as a symbol of the duality between life and death. Its fragile and ephemeral beauty evokes the transience of existence, while its transformation refers to the idea of change and transcendence.
Damien Hirst (Bristol, 1965) grew up in a modest environment marked by parental absence, which influenced his vision of art as a classless field. He trained at the University of Leeds and later at Goldsmiths College in London, while working in various jobs, including a mortuary, an experience that would mark his work. From his beginnings he stood out both as an artist and as a curator, organizing exhibitions that renewed British art. He achieved international recognition by winning the Turner Prize in 1995 and consolidated his career with important exhibitions and the backing of influential galleries. Known for his ambition and his reflection on death and fame, Hirst became a key figure in contemporary art, with works in top museums such as MoMA, the Tate and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
