BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

FERNANDO CÁNOVAS (Buenos Aires, 1960).
"Ibiza Nº 8", 2009.
Acrylic on canvas.
Signed on the back.
With certificate of authenticity.
Measurements: 160 x 210 cm.

Large format work belonging to the series "Ibiza", in which Fernando Cánovas develops an expansive abstraction, marked by the chromatic intensity and experimentation with acrylic material. The surface is articulated by dragging, glazes and color overlays that generate a sense of light vibration, close to the reflection, the fragmented landscape and the sensory experience of space.
The composition combines broad masses of greens, pinks, yellows, reds and oranges with vertical and horizontal rhythms that introduce a tension between gesture and structure. Far from a literal representation, Cánovas transforms the light and Mediterranean energy of Ibiza into a dynamic, enveloping pictorial field of strong visual impact.

Fernando Cánovas trained in Paris, where he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and worked under the influence of figures such as Pierre Alechinsky and Roberto Matta. His career has an important institutional projection: in 1997 the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires dedicated a large retrospective to him, which later toured institutions in Brazil, Spain and Belgium, and in 2007 the IVAM in Valencia hosted a large-format retrospective. His work is also represented in the collection of the Centre Pompidou / Musée national d'art moderne in Paris.
His presence in the international market has been supported by sales and appearances in houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's, where works from the nineties with similar characteristics, especially large format acrylics, have been offered. In this context, "Ibiza No. 8" brings together several elements of interest to collectors: large scale, visual intensity, belonging to an identifiable series, certificate of authenticity and a fully recognizable language within the artist's mature production.
