Milo Lockett (Guillermo Emilio Lockett) is one of Argentina’s most internationally renowned contemporary artists. Self-taught, he began his professional career after his textile company closed during Argentina’s 2001 economic crisis, at which point he decided to devote himself entirely to painting. Within a few years, he developed his own artistic language that made him a sensation with the public and one of Argentina’s best-selling living artists. His work is characterized by the use of flat, intense colors, childlike figures, sharply defined black outlines, and a simple, direct iconography. Inspired by art brut, graffiti, and Argentine artists such as Jorge de la Vega, Rómulo Macció, Adolfo Nigro, and Ernesto Deira, Lockett seeks to bring contemporary art to a broad audience through an accessible style brimming with optimism. His paintings, featuring characters, animals, and faces with large, expressive eyes, convey values such as solidarity, joy, and inclusion.
