Beginning in 1970, Orus developed the Parallel Worlds series, one of the most personal and innovative cycles of his work. Fascinated by research on light and by scientific theories regarding the existence of parallel universes, he experimented with special pigments, metallic materials, and black light (ultraviolet), creating works whose appearance changes depending on the type of lighting. The artist described these paintings as “works of a different luminous dimension,” capable of offering a distinct visual experience under white light or black light, transforming a single painting into two perceptual realities. In this series, he delved deeper into concepts such as light, color, movement, and cosmic space—elements that defined the most mature phase of his career.
A self-taught painter, José Orús began painting in 1949, and just two years later he was selected to participate in the First Hispano-American Biennial in Madrid. He was a co-founder of the avant-garde Niké salon and gained international recognition through his participation in the Paris (1961) and Venice (1964) Biennales. Throughout his life, he held numerous exhibitions, and his work is currently on display at the museum bearing his name in Zaragoza, as well as at the Municipal Museum of Utebo.
