*Duty Keeps Me on This Island* is one of the fundamental series from Salustiano García Cruz’s early mature period, considered a turning point in his career. Initially presented at the Bores & Mallo Gallery in Madrid, the series marks the definitive departure from the more experimental works of the 1990s, giving way to the pictorial language that would define his later work—based on a style of painting characterized by extreme refinement, executed with impeccable technique, and conceived as a space for reflection on the human condition.
In this work, the artist presents an isolated male portrait against an intense orange background, dispensing with any narrative elements to focus all attention on the serene presence of the subject and the subtlety of his expression. The circular composition, combined with the warmth of the color palette, intensifies the portrait’s timeless and contemplative character, making it a representative example of one of the phases of Salustiano’s work most prized by collectors.
The title of the series, taken from the famous verse “Duty keeps me on this island” from Rafael Alberti’s *Marinero en tierra*, transcends its literary reference to become a metaphor for isolation, introspection, and the search for identity. In this context, the male figure appears suspended in a space stripped of narrative or temporal references, where all attention falls on the character’s presence and the psychological intensity of his portrayal. Beauty, understood by Salustiano not as an aesthetic end in itself but as a vehicle for contemplation, takes on a deeply symbolic dimension here.
With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Seville, Salustiano has built a solid international career with exhibitions at institutions such as the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles, the LUMA Museum in Chicago, and the Vostell Malpartida Museum, in addition to participating in some of the leading contemporary art fairs, including ARCO, Art Cologne, The Armory Show in New York, Art Miami, KIAF in Seoul, and SCOPE. His work is part of prominent international private collections and has been widely featured in specialized publications, consolidating his position as one of the Spanish figurative painters with the greatest international reach.
