From a young age, David Rodríguez Caballero showed an interest in art and decided to pursue professional training in this field. He studied Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country from 1989 to 1995, where he began to develop an artistic career initially focused on painting.
Over the years, his understanding of art evolved. His early works were primarily created on Plexiglas and were characterized by the use of white and an exploration of textures and depth. However, his time in New York in the late 1990s marked a significant turning point in his career. There, he discovered the possibilities of aluminum, a material that would eventually become one of the fundamental elements of his work.
Rodríguez Caballero began bending, cutting, sanding, and shaping aluminum to create geometric and abstract forms. Light plays a particularly important role in his works, as it reflects off the metallic surfaces and creates shadows and visual shifts depending on the viewer’s position. In this way, the artist succeeded in establishing a dialogue between painting and sculpture, going so far as to define his work as a form of “painting without paint.”
Throughout his career, he has also worked with other materials, such as copper, brass, bronze, steel, vinyl, and tracing paper. His works have taken on various formats, ranging from small pieces to monumental sculptures, while always maintaining his interest in geometry, space, movement, and light.
His artistic career has unfolded in both Spain and the United States, particularly in Madrid and New York. His works have been exhibited in museums, galleries, and institutions in various countries and are part of major public and private collections. Among the venues that have hosted his work are the Würth Museum in La Rioja, the Esteban Vicente Museum in Segovia, and various international galleries.
David Rodríguez Caballero’s work is characterized, in short, by a geometric abstraction in which materials, light, and space take center stage. Through seemingly simple forms, the artist creates sculptures that change depending on the lighting and the viewer’s perspective. His career thus represents an evolution from traditional painting toward a more open conception of art, situated between painting, sculpture, and research into space.
