“Langsa (Sumatra)” is part of the body of work created by Pau Nubíola during his time in New York, in which painting, graphic experimentation, and artistic performance converge. The presence of Rubén Cromo, a recurring figure in his creative universe, introduces a performative and conceptual dimension that transcends the boundaries of traditional painting. The combination of digital printing, oil, and damar reinforces this hybrid nature, positioning the work at the intersection of image, painting, and artistic intervention.
Pau Nubíola is a leading figure in the Catalan experimental scene that emerged in the 1980s. In 1985, he was a founding member of Los Rinos, alongside Marcel·lí Antúnez and Sergi Caballero, a collective dedicated to artistic experimentation, performance, and action. He later participated in Gegant, developing pictorial interventions and actions in various international contexts. In the mid-1990s, he moved to New York, where he developed a fundamental part of his career.
In 2001, he presented the Monocrom project in Barcelona, centered on the figure of Rubén Cromo, which includes works such as this one. His career has since been recognized by institutions such as MACBA, which included Los Rinos in *Acció. Una història provisional dels 90*. His later work incorporates travel, spirituality, and Tibetan culture, while maintaining a constant commitment to interdisciplinary experimentation. He also starred in Finisterrae (2010) by Sergi Caballero, a film that won the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2011.
