Part of the “Renovation Color” series, this work is part of a project consisting of fifty American flags—one for each state—through which Tito Pérez Mora explores the idea of transformation using one of the most recognizable symbols of the United States. The series emerged during the artist’s stay in New York State, where he observed how numerous renovated homes were painted in a distinctive bluish-gray hue colloquially known as “renovation color.”
In *Alaska*, the uniform application of this shade to the flag softens its distinctive colors but keeps its structure—including the seams, stars, and stripes—visibly intact. This gesture thus transforms a highly politically charged emblem through a deliberately simple process: covering, renovating, and making the change visible. The choice of flags from the historic Annin company and Benjamin Moore exterior paint further links the symbolic object to the domestic and everyday origins of the project.
Tito Pérez Mora develops a practice linked to memory, traces, archives, and processes of transformation, often drawing on personal experiences to address issues of a collective nature. His work has been exhibited at institutions and venues such as the CAAM-Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, Conde Duque, Museo ABC, Matadero Madrid, Ivorypress, Fundación Ortega-Marañón, and PhotoEspaña, and he has participated in art fairs such as ARCO, Pinta London, Art Lima, Estampa, and Arte Santander.
