"Den Haag" draws on the image of The Hague as a city closely linked to the idea of justice, transforming the landscape into a composition with strong symbolic content. The horizon, the lighthouse, and the waterwheel serve as recognizable landmarks within a scene dominated by the light of sunset, conceived by the artist as a metaphor for waiting, guidance, and hope.
The work belongs to the “10º” series, created using fluid painterly techniques and a slight tilt of the canvas that encourages the movement of paint, transparencies, and textures reminiscent of watercolor. Martín thus combines figuration and abstraction, granting light and atmosphere a central role that takes precedence over the literal depiction of the landscape.
Alfonso Martín’s work focuses on contemporary watercolor and fluid techniques, combining figuration and abstraction with a special emphasis on light. He has trained with artists such as Álvaro Castagnet, Julia Barminova, and Roberto Barba, and has received various awards in on-site painting and watercolor competitions, including first prizes in Gines (2022), Vejer de la Frontera (2023), and the 4th Córdoba International Watercolor Competition (2026).
