DESCRIPTION
IVAN LEHUTSKYI (Donetsk region, Ukraine, 1961).
"Waiting for Singularity," 2024.
Acrylic on canvas.

Measurements: 120 × 80 cm.
The work prompts reflection on the individual’s position in the face of technological and social development that seems to be advancing faster than our ability to understand its consequences. Lehutskyi approaches the concept of singularity not as a promise of mastery, but as a critical juncture from which to reconsider humanity’s relationship with a natural world of which it is a part and whose laws predate it.
The central figure—elongated and subjected to marked deformation—is articulated through overlapping planes and strong chromatic hallmarks. Blues, violets, and ochres stand out against a luminous background, creating an unstable image in which the body seems to simultaneously construct itself and fragment. This tension between physical presence and visual dissolution reflects one of the central themes of the artist’s practice: the use of fragmentation as a metaphor for the psychological and social processes that affect contemporary identity.
In *Waiting for Singularity*, this instability also takes on an ecological and existential dimension. The work suggests that humanity’s next stage may depend less on the conquest of the external world than on the recovery of an ability to listen and connect with living things.
Ivan Lehutskyi studied from 1985 to 1990 at the Kharkiv Art Institute, in the Department of Monumental and Decorative Painting, and in 1996 furthered his training in the United States through the Artistic Stained Glass program. From 2002 to 2023, he worked professionally on artistic stained-glass and mosaic projects, returning to easel painting during the pandemic. He currently lives and works in Spain. His work is part of the collections of NPK Bank in Kharkiv and the Checkpoint Charlie Museum in Berlin, as well as international private collections.
