CANEN GARCÍA (Colombia, 1975).
“Woman from the Village,” 2011.
Acrylic on canvas.
Certificate of authenticity included.
Measurements: 116 x 89 cm.
The female portrait and Latin American folk identity take center stage in this work by Canen García, characterized by its intense color palette and striking expressiveness. The artist depicts a smiling woman through a composition of geometric shapes and broad swaths of color, dominated by yellows, reds, and pinks that are hallmarks of the black background. The thick, dark outlines and the fragmentation of the face evoke the aesthetic of stained-glass windows, while the simplification of the features and the chromatic intensity bring the work closer to Expressionism and Latin American folk art.
Canen García initially trained in architecture, graduating in 1998, and furthered his artistic studies in Colombia and Spain. Based in Barcelona since 2001, he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in Spain and Colombia, and has been a member of various artistic collectives. Among his accolades are the awards he received at the Contestarte competition in Bogotá in 2009 and 2010.
