Agricultural labor and Latin American rural traditions take center stage in this composition by Canen García, in which two workers appear amid the lush vegetation of a banana plantation. The panoramic format accentuates the expansiveness of the scene, while the large clusters of fruit and tropical leaves create a tapestry of shapes and colors of remarkable visual intensity. The geometric fragmentation, the sharply defined dark outlines, and the vibrant contrasts of greens, yellows, and reds evoke the aesthetic of stained-glass windows, a hallmark of the artist’s pictorial language. The work thus combines an expressive vision of the tropical landscape with a celebration of cultural identity and peasant labor.
Canen García initially trained in architecture, graduating in 1998, and furthered his artistic studies in Colombia and Spain. Based in Barcelona since 2001, he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in Spain and Colombia, and has been a member of various artistic collectives. Among his accolades are the awards he received at the Contestarte competition in Bogotá in 2009 and 2010.
