The figure of the palenquera, emblematic of the popular culture of the Colombian Caribbean, takes center stage in this composition of intense color and striking expressiveness. The woman, depicted in her traditional attire with a tray of fruit balanced on her head, stands out against a background of vibrant orange hues. The dark outlines, the simplification of forms, and the broad swaths of color evoke the aesthetic of stained-glass windows, a hallmark of the artist’s pictorial language.
The work reflects Canen García’s interest in folk traditions, cultural identity, and collective memory, reinterpreted through a figurative language closely related to Expressionism and Latin American folk art.
Canen García initially trained in architecture, graduating in 1998, and furthered his artistic studies in Colombia and Spain. Based in Barcelona since 2001, he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in Spain and Colombia, and has been a member of various artistic collectives. Among his accolades are the awards he received at the Contestarte competition in Bogotá in 2009 and 2010.
