BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Naveta of the 17th century.
Embossed and chiseled silver.
Weight: 320 gr.
Measurements: 19 x 20 x 8 cm.

The baroque naveta in tender stands on a simple circular molded foot, embellished in its upper part with palmettes, culminating in a shaft with a central knot. It has a boat-shaped body, with a prominent bow and stern. Only one of the sides is practicable (the navetas could have one or two lids), with a hinged lid. The piece is decorated with medallions, turnings and scrolls worked by chiseling and embossing.

The silver has a natural dark patina that highlights the reliefs and the silversmith's handwork. The curved forms and the balance of the piece denote a careful manufacture.

The naveta is a type of religious silverware that emerged in the thirteenth century, and whose function is to keep the incense used during the rite. In the 15th century, perhaps due to the influence of overseas voyages, these types of pieces began to copy the shape of ships of the time, from simple navetas with the shape of the hull of a real ship to authentic masterpieces that even include the woodwork. It was also at this time that the naveta transcended the religious sphere and began to be used in table service, as a spice rack.
