Escribanía; Spanish, Juan Sellan, Madrid Villa y Corte, 1856.
Silver.
Measurements: 21 x 14 x 25 cm.
Weight: 1262g.
An example of the ornamental taste and material culture of Elizabethan Spain. Executed in silver, the piece not only responds to a practical function within the bourgeois or aristocratic desk, but also stands as an object of social representation, where luxury and erudition are intertwined.
From a stylistic point of view, the writing desk is part of the historicist trends of the mid-19th century, with clear references to the decorative repertoire of the late Baroque and Rococo periods. This ornamental revival is evident in the profusion of vegetal elements, scrolls and cartouches that decorate the central body, as well as in the balanced symmetry that structures the whole. The base, with molded contours and supported by zoomorphic legs, provides visual and physical stability, while the two lateral vessels, with grooved surfaces, suggest a reinterpretation of classical orders in a decorative key.
The production of silverware in Madrid during this period experienced a remarkable development, favored by the demand for luxury objects and by the survival of artisan workshops that combined traditional techniques with new aesthetic sensibilities.
