DESCRIPTION
JEAN E. PUIFORCAT ( France, 1897-1945).
Pair of centerpieces, ca. 1930.
Silver and onyx.
In good condition, with slight signs of use.
Signed and stamped by the Puiforcat workshop.
Measurements: 13 x 21 cm (diameter, x2).
Pair of centerpieces of refined geometric design, conceived with a large silver cup elevated on a circular base. The structure is articulated by an elegant central column decorated with rhythmic rings and a prominent intermediate element in onyx, which provides material contrast and visual sophistication. The ensemble reveals a precise balance between volume, proportion and formal purity, characteristic of Art Deco aesthetics.
The pieces bear the signature of Jean Puiforcat (1897-1945), an outstanding Parisian goldsmith and son of a renowned family of silversmiths. Self-taught in design, although trained in sculpture with Louis Lejeunem, Puiforcat began his independent production in 1922, developing his own language based on geometry, the golden ratio and ornamental purification. His work, deeply influenced by the modern spirit, combines structural rigor and restrained luxury. A passionate collector of 18th century silverware, he knew how to integrate tradition and the avant-garde in pieces of extraordinary technical and aesthetic quality. Today, his creations are part of important international museum collections, consolidating him as one of the key figures of 20th century goldsmithing.
