DESCRIPTION
Set of cutlery; Spain, late nineteenth century - early twentieth century.
Silver.
Measurements: 30 x 7 x 4 cm (larger).
Weight: 3.242 gr.
This set of silver cutlery, made in Spain between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, reflects the transition between the nineteenth century historicist taste and a progressive formal simplification of the new century. It is a heterogeneous set, composed of several incomplete cutlery pieces, suggesting prolonged use and replacements over time.
The pieces present sober designs, with handles of smooth lines and little ornamentation, although some examples preserve discreet decorative motifs or engraved initials that provide a personalized character. The typological variety, forks, spoons, ladles and small serving utensils, is evidence of their functionality in the domestic sphere. Spanish silverware in the 20th century underwent an evolution marked by a dialogue between tradition and modernity. At the beginning of the century, many workshops continued to produce pieces in historicist styles, such as neo-baroque or neo-rococo, inherited from the 19th century and highly appreciated by a conservative clientele.
