French harness of the late nineteenth century, made of gilded bronze and patinated with black marble bases, belonging to the Parisian decorative tradition developed during the second half of the century.
In this period, marked by the rise of the bourgeoisie and the consolidation of eclectic taste, the artistic bronze workshops, heirs of the great goldsmiths of the 18th century, produced sets of garniture for representative salons and wealthy residences, combining references to Baroque and Rococo with technical advances in casting and gilding.
Aesthetically, the set stands out for the exuberance of its ornamentation and the quality of the chiseling: the clock, crowned by an allegorical figure with a very careful sculptural finish, and the candelabra, with a complex structure and sinuous arms, illustrate the search for theatricality and magnificence typical of fin-de-siècle French historicism.
