DESCRIPTION
Atmos table clock; JAEGER LECOULTRE; Switzerland, c. 1980.
Brass.
Measurements: 22 x 17.5 x 13.5 cm.
The Atmos clock represents one of the most unique milestones of 20th century watchmaking. Conceived as a perpetual movement watch, the Atmos is powered by the slightest variations in temperature and atmospheric pressure, allowing it to operate for years without the need for manual winding or an external power source. This innovation, developed and perfected from the 1930s onwards, made the Atmos a symbol of technical precision, mechanical ingenuity and silent elegance, closer to a scientific object than a conventional watch.
Its ultimate development is closely linked to the firm Jaeger-LeCoultre, founded in 1833 in the Vallée de Joux (Switzerland). From its origins, the house distinguished itself by being the first major watch manufacture to integrate all the disciplines of watch creation in the same company, from design and engineering to the manufacture of components and final assembly.
